Kindergarten & 1st grade

Kindergarten and 1st grade students are introduced to the Second Step curriculum of Social-Emotional Learning. They begin with lessons focused on skills needed for successful learning and developing positive classroom behavior and social connections. We then discuss recognizing and managing emotions in ourselves and others. In addition to the Second Step curriculum, K & 1 students also work with Kelso's Choice curriculum to learn appropriate conflict resolution skills.

As we transition to career exploration, students in Kindergarten and 1st grade will focus on identifying the types of career areas that exist in our society.

Grades 2 & 3

Students in 2nd and 3rd grades continue building on the foundations laid during the previous two years with the Second Step curriculum. Students review the skills needed for success in the classroom, and are introduced to and practice various emotion management techniques. There is also a strong emphasis on developing empathy and understanding for others' feelings.

The career lessons of the 2nd and 3rd grade curriculum focus on developing an increased awareness of career types and making connections to personal interests. Students also begin to explore entrepreneurship.

Grades 4 & 5

4th and 5th grade students continue to work with the Second Step curriculum, which gives students a chance to practice appropriate responses to the types of social situations common to students at these ages. There is a continued emphasis on empathy and accepting differences, as well as personal emotional regulation techniques.

Career exploration in these grades focuses on the investigation of possible career choices based on personal interests and strengths. Additionally, students learn skills such as goal-setting and time-management that can be beneficial across career and academic settings.
